So you’re looking to buy a new gaming laptop? The MSI G Series GT70 2OD-039US offers a sleek design packed in with some great hardware to play the latest games with fantastic results. How does the GT70 stack up against some of the other best gaming laptops in the price range? Let’s take a look and see if this laptop is worth the price.

The first thing you notice with any new computer is the design. The MSI GT70 makes sure it will catch you eye with a glossy red and black color scheme. The casing is highlighted by a dragon theme which covers both the outside of the laptop and the inside along the touchpad. It makes a big first impression and definitely looks clean. However, some may find that the dragon design is too loud in comparison to the average, simple design of a laptop. The aluminum casing will be sure to withstand a little bit of wear and tear, and if not, the GT70 comes with a 2 year warranty. One downside to the GT70 is that it’s a bit heavier than the standard laptop, weighing in at 8.6 pounds. The 17.3 inch laptop isn’t exactly ideal for toting around, but it makes up for this with its impressive performance.

One thing that can be said for the MSI GT70 is that it’s a graphical powerhouse. With a 1920 x 1080 matte display in beautiful HD, the GT70 can bring game worlds to life like few other laptops. It’s capable of playing any current game at the highest setting and it does so without any real hiccups. Even on the lowest settings games still look good, although the textures are expectedly murkier and finer details become pixelated. The GT70 has a Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor, 32 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, NVIDIA Geforce GTX780M graphics processor, and it runs the Windows 8 operating system. You shouldn’t have to worry about running out of space anytime soon with a 1 TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive and 384 GB Solid-State Drive.

Where the GT70 sets itself apart from the competition is in the audio department. Most laptops have the stigma of having terrible speakers, but the GT70 sets out to crush that stereotype. While a good pair of headphones is still a great way to pick up on all the details, listening to music, watching a movie, or playing a game with the standard speakers is now a viable option. Vocals are crisp and clear and there is a surprising amount of bass if you alter the settings just a bit. How many other laptops can say they have a subwoofer inside?

The GT70 comes with a fairly impressive webcam that delivers vivid colors and is able to maintain a steady frame rate. One problem is that it has trouble coming into focus on objects in the distance, but in comparison to most laptop webcams the GT70 is standing strong. The laptop includes 2 USB 2.0 ports and 3 USB 3.0 ports along the sides, so you should be able to hook up all of your accessories and gadgets without a problem. It also features a lithium-ion battery that puts most gaming laptops to shame. The Cooler Boost 2 system has a quiet fan that reduces the temperature by up to 8° C. This combined with Intel’s fourth-generation core CPU helps the battery tremendously and makes it possible to use the computer without having to be in reach of a charger at all times. The battery was able to last for right around four hours of surfing the web over a Wi-Fi connection on a full charge.

The Verdict

The MSI GT70 is certainly one of the better gaming laptops on the market, but its steep price of $2,699.99 makes it a steep investment. The unique design along with a great performance in both the graphics and audio departments justify the high price tag. It comes with all of the features you would want and expect out of a gaming PC, including one of the better webcams we’ve seen on a laptop. When compared with our “best gaming laptop of 2013”–the Alienware m17x, the MSI GT70 is a strong challenger. However, it’s not quite good enough to surpass the m17x. With a better display, sturdier design, and slightly better hardware, the Alienware still wins the battle. That’s not to say the MSI GT70 doesn’t give it a run for its money.

So is it worth the daunting price? The MSI GT70 is an excellent gaming laptop and designed to be able to play the most powerful games at their maximized settings. I would only recommend it for those who are completely hardcore gamers. If you play games here and there, but can enjoy games without running all of them at the absolute peak performance, you’ll probably be fine with something at a cheaper price point. If you’ve got the money to spend and are looking for a powerful portable gaming rig, the MSI GT70 is a great option.
