Catching A Sturgeon

Granted, it is not the most popular thing around – Fishing still is an integral part of the Stardew Valley experience. If not for the Fish themselves, you might consider reeling in a few to unlock some achievements!

With tons of species to discover, it can take a lot of work to keep track of the requirements for every other Fish. Do not worry, though; today, I will cover Sturgeons and everything there is to know about them!

Where Can You Find Sturgeons?

Fishing In The Mountain Lake Region

Sturgeons can commonly be found in the Mountain Lake region of Stardew Valley. They can only be caught between 6am-7pm in the summer or winter. Sturgeons are more likely to be found on rainy Summer days.

As I have explained, Sturgeons are exclusive to the Summer and Winter seasons of the game. Additionally, you can only catch them between 6am-7pm; however, this is more than enough time to get your hands on one.

Sturgeons can only be caught in the Mountain Lake region unless you have the Wilderness Farm. You can see them on your Farm, but the season and time requirements still hold. They can also randomly appear in the stock of the Traveling Cart.

If you are unaware, the Mountain Lake region is the body of water that can be found right before the Mine Entrance in the top-right corner of the map. You can refer to the image above to better understand where exactly this is.

The time restrictions for catching this Fish can be surpassed if you use Magic Bait. You will also have a higher chance of finding one on a rainy Summer day. In contrast, rainy Winter days have the least luck to spawn a Sturgeon.

Lastly, you will have a higher chance of catching a Sturgeon the farther away you cast your reel!

How Do You Catch A Sturgeon?

The Sturgeon has a difficulty level of 78. This is not too high – but it is not low like fish species such as the Sunfish. In a nutshell, catching a Sturgeon is not too tricky, but it is not easy either. You should come prepared and have at least a day’s worth of spare time to have a better chance of catching one.

Once you have taken care of all the weather, area, and timing requirements mentioned above – you are ready to hook up one of these! You should use Fishing Tackles like the Cork Bobber and Lead Bobber to make the fishing mini-game easier for yourself.

A Sturgeon can sometimes have erratic movement, so using a Fishing Tackle can help you tremendously. Using these can make your fishing bar larger while also slowing down the movement of the Fish. The procedure is pretty straightforward, like any other species – just cast the reel, play the mini-game, and hook it in!

You also have a higher chance of catching one if you throw your reel farther away. This can be a bit harder to master initially, but it is worth it. Try to max out your fishing rod before every throw to have the highest chance of catching a Sturgeon.

Another tip is to use an external mouse if you are on a laptop, which makes the fishing mini-game much easier!

Are Sturgeons Rare?

Well, yes and no. Are they as rare as species like Stingrays? No. That said, Sturgeons are not the easiest to come by. Do not worry; they are not extremely hard to find. You should be able to get your hands on one in about a day’s effort.

What Can Sturgeons Be Used For?

Here is a breakdown of what you can do with a Sturgeon.

Catching A Sturgeon

Gifting & Bundles

First and foremost, you can give Sturgeons to Villagers. They are not very well received, so you should not hope to get many friendship points out of them! The following table showcases villagers’ sentiments about receiving the Fish as a gift.

Sturgeons can also be used in the Lake Fish Bundle of the Fish Tank in the Community Center. This is actually a pretty nice use for it!

Tailoring & Recipes

You can use a Sturgeon in the Sewing Machine found in Emily’s House to create a Fishing Vest. It can also be used to create Blue Dye!

In the case of cooking, the Fish can be used to create universal fish items like Maki Rolls, Sashimi, and Quality Fertilizers. There are not any Sturgeon-specific dishes for you to prepare, though! Sturgeons can also be eaten to re-gain some health and energy. You can find specifics about the amount replenished on the official Stardew Valley Wiki!

Fish Ponds

You can place some Sturgeons inside if you have any Fish Ponds on your Farm! Once set in, Sturgeons can reproduce once every 4 days. This is not exactly the best use for them, though – and I would not recommend it because of the low worth of the product.

If you are unaware, Sturgeons placed in a Fish Pond will only produce Sturgeon Roe. While it is true that you can further process these into Caviar by placing them in a Preserves Jar, it is really not worth all the extra effort – even with the added value.

Lastly, Sturgeons are not needed for any quests. They may be asked for in ‘Help Wanted’ quests posted outside Pierre’s shop occasionally – but that is about it!
